Think triangle and mathematicians ask “Isosceles, Equilateral or Right?” while North Carolinians ask “Duke, UNC Chapel Hill or North Carolina State?” The nickname “The Triangle” originally referred to the three universities whose research facilities comprised the research triangle. Located in northern central North Carolina, the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are best known for their outstanding tertiary educational facilities, research, broad base of businesses and well-educated workforce.
Along with academic pursuit, university life brings with it sporting events and loyalty, rivalry and competition. The three universities are all competitive nationally in basketball, each having won two or more NCAA Championships. The Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill have five notches in their winning belt, including the most recent 2009 win, while the Duke Blue Devils have three wins in their column. The North Carolina State Wolfpack have two championships, for a collective total of ten. Though professional sports teams are sparse, the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes do have a Stanley Cup to their credit, making the only professional team a highly successful one.
The major employers in The Triangle include the three universities and the public school systems, as well as American Airlines, DuPont, Qualcomm, Syngenta, Toyota, Burt’s Bees, Verizon, Bayer Corp., Cisco Systems, the EPA and United States Forest Service. Due to it’s educational choices, workforce and relative economic health, The Triangle has been named to many “top” awards lists, including Top High Tech Region, Best Places to Live in America, Top Business State, Top Real Estate Market, and Best Place for Business and Careers, to name a few.
